Description

Huntsville is the fastest growing metropolitan area in the state of Alabama at a rate of eight percent per year. Compared to the city’s competitors – Mobile, Montgomery, and Birmingham – Huntsville is the only city with a positive population increase. With a rapidly increasing metropolitan including the state’s fastest growing suburban city, Madison, it is important that city planning is prepared for the change. In this project I will examine the research question “is the Huntsville area’s transportation infrastructure prepared for the rapid increase in population?” Through initial GIS analysis, urban observations, evaluating future construction plans, and the field method of interviewing, I will acquire data on current transportation infrastructure in Huntsville and will produce maps to determine whether or not the city’s infrastructure will be able to sustain expected future growth, or whether substantial new investment in infrastructure will be required, and where. (Note: this poster will present proposed research, rather than completed research.)
