"Understanding Blockchain Technology and Its Applications: A Critical Analysis

Research Questions: This research attempts to address the following questions: (1) What is blockchain technology? (2) What are the current and future applications of blockchain technology? (3) What are some of the current and foreseeable challenges?

Context and Motivation: Blockchain is a technological innovation of intense interest that has the potential of being as disruptive and transformative to business and industry as the Internet. A blockchain is a decentralized, distributed, digitized ledger of facts that is recorded chronologically, permanently, and shared publicly in real time. Blockchain technology and its applications have appeared in many industry sectors including medical services, supply-chain, financial and insurance services, and entertainment.

It can be argued, however, that due to the novelty of the technology many enterprise applications have not progressed beyond the proof-of-concept stage. There are many opportunities for providing insight into the economic, social, organizational, environmental, and institutional benefits and drawbacks of blockchain.

Analysis Methods: Triangulation will be used for this research. The primary approach will be a literature review of blockchain technology and its applications to include academic articles, trade publications, and industry whitepapers. Secondary data analysis, textual analysis, and financial analysis will also be used as necessary.

Expected Results: (1) A beginner’s guide to blockchain technology, accessible to anyone regardless of prior knowledge. (2) A list of current and future applications of blockchain technology including descriptions and analysis (e.g., Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats; or SWOT). (3) A list of challenges and potential solutions that address technical issues, business models, government regulation, and adoption of the new technology.

Major Contributions: It is our hope that this research will instill knowledge, inspire creativity, provide insight, and induce productive activity related to blockchain technology and its applications"
