© 2015 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. This chapter is an introduction to the Phylum Mollusca and a review of freshwater gastropod systematics, evolution, regional distribution and diversity, reproduction and life history, general ecology, parasitism, biogeography, and conservation. Freshwater gastropods are abundant organisms with dominant roles in lake and stream ecosystems. The diversity of freshwater gastropods is high, and their systematics are under continual revision. Many freshwater gastropods are at risk of extinction from a variety of human impacts that are predominantly habitat destruction. The chapter concludes with details of collecting, culturing, and preparation of specimens.
